Tatu is a project of Rendeavour, AfricaâÂÂs largest urban land developer with over 30,000 acres of visionary projects in the growth trajectories of large cities in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo. RendeavourâÂÂs vision goes beyond alleviating what is a self-evident problem - that of stifling urban congestion and a dearth of quality housing and commercial property in Africa. Rather, we aim to help create the infrastructure - the living and working spaces, communities, schools and hospitals - that will help sustain and accelerate AfricaâÂÂs economic growth, meet the aspirations of AfricaâÂÂs burgeoning middle classes, and serve as a catalyst for further urban development. Position Overview Tatu City is seeking to hire a Material Engineer who will report to the Project Manager and will be tasked with overseeing material specifications, procurement, and compliance with design and architectural standards. The role involves identifying and preâÂÂqualifying premium suppliers across global markets, managing catalogues and sample presentations, and ensuring quality assurance through testing, inspections, and lifecycle assessments. In addition, the Material Engineer will align material delivery with project schedules and drive value engineering by recommending sustainable, costâÂÂeffective alternatives without compromising design intent. Key Duties and Responsibilities Material Specification & Procurement: Review, analyze, and approve high-end material specifications, technical datasheets, and test reports to ensure full compliance with project design requirements and structural/architectural standards. Leverage extensive knowledge of construction material markets in the Middle East, China, India, North Africa, and East Africa to identify optimal suppliers and premium manufacturers. Evaluate and pre-qualify material suppliers, acting as the primary technical point of contact during the procurement, submittal, and factory-inspection processes. Catalogue, Sample Management & Presentation: Lead the preparation, curation, and presentation of comprehensive material catalogues, mood boards, and physical sample boards for consultant review and executive management approval. Prepare and deliver clear, convincing technical and commercial presentations to senior management, consultants, and stakeholders to facilitate swift material selection. Quality Assurance & Lifecycle Assessment: Oversee material testing protocols, ensure that all materials delivered to the site match the approved samples exactly, and assess long-term durability for luxury finishes. Track production lead times and shipping logistics to ensure material delivery seamlessly aligns with the master construction schedule. Proactively drive value engineering by identifying alternative premium materials that optimize project costs and sustainability without compromising the architectural design intent. Requirements Skills and experience: Education: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or architectural engineering is required. An MBA is considered a strong advantage. Experience: A minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience as a Material Engineer in the large-scale construction field, with a proven portfolio of work on high-end or luxury real estate developments. Market Expertise: Established networks and direct procurement experience within the construction material markets of the Middle East, China, India, North Africa, and East Africa. Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of material specifications, datasheets, industry standards (e.g., British Standards, Eurocodes), and manufacturing processes. BIM Experience: General awareness and functional understanding of Building Information Modeling (BIM) environments is an advantage.
