The role serves as a key partner to the business, providing practical, commercially focused legal advice to support decision-making while ensuring the company operates within a strong governance and compliance framework. It also drives the development and implementation of policies, processes, and initiatives that promote high standards of integrity, accountability, quality, and ethical conduct across the organization. Duties and Responsiblities Lead the identification, assessment, and management of legal and regulatory risks, and develop and implement strategies to mitigate current and anticipated exposures across the business. Provide strategic legal counsel to senior management, guiding corporate decision-making while promoting the highest standards of integrity, governance, and ethical conduct. Oversee and ensure alignment with applicable legal frameworks, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. Ensure full compliance with all statutory and regulatory obligations, including continuous monitoring of legislative and regulatory developments and advising the business on their impact. Implement, and maintain the Legal & Compliance Department’s Standard Operating Procedures, policies, and internal controls. Prepare and present quarterly Legal & Compliance reports to the Group General Counsel, highlighting key risk, regulatory, and governance matters. Lead contract management functions, including drafting, review, negotiation, and execution of commercial agreements in line with the Company’s approval and execution mandates. Provide legal oversight on corporate and commercial transactions, including procurement processes, supplier arrangements, and conveyancing matters relating to company-owned properties and lease agreements. Establish and manage the company’s compliance framework (“compliance universe”), including defining, monitoring, and evaluating compliance obligations and controls. Oversee Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Know Your Customer (KYC), and due diligence processes in compliance with Financial Reporting Centre requirements. Manage disputes and litigation, including the appointment and oversight of external counsel, and directing legal strategy across all stages of proceedings (pleadings, pre-trial, trial, and settlement). Support business operations in debt recovery processes and related enforcement actions. Develop and implement corporate policies and lead training initiatives to ensure staff awareness and adherence to legal and compliance requirements. Own and manage the Department’s financial planning cycle, including budgeting, cost control, and resource allocation. Support and lead cross-functional projects and strategic initiatives as required by the business. Key Result Areas Increased win- rate in litigations. Knowledge And Skills Required Prior exposure to supporting business operations in the financial services sector. Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with senior executives and cross-functional set of colleagues. Good understanding of the regulatory environment. Pragmatic, solution-driven approach. Ability to multi-task in a rapidly changing environment and perform under pressure. High commitment on integrity with the inteal fortitude and genuine interest to uphold and enforce Minet’s standards for the highest ethical conduct amidst all the business pressure. Assertive with the ability to coherently articulate issues orally and verbally. High level of intellectual agility, initiative, self-motivation and resourcefulness. Minimum 7 years Post Qualification Experience to practice as an Advocate in Kenya. Professional and Academic Qualifications Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB) from a recognized University. Relevant industry experience in a busy legal department for a mid-sized corporate institution. Experience in the insurance field/sector preferred. LLM or any relevant Master’s Degree. Certified Secretary (CS) - added advantage.
